Latin is an Italic language of the Indo-European family and was the language of ancient Rome and its empire. It has no native speakers today, yet it never quite died: the Romance languages, including Italian, Spanish, French, Portuguese and Romanian, all developed from its spoken forms. Latin remains an official language of the Holy See, and the Catholic Church still uses it in documents and liturgy. Science and law lean on it too, from the binomial names of species to phrases heard in English courts. The Latin alphabet it was written in became the world's most widely used script. Classical Latin, the polished literary form, differed from the everyday spoken Latin from which the Romance languages actually descend.
