Latvian is the official language of Latvia and, with Lithuanian, one of only two surviving Baltic languages, a branch of Indo-European noted for preserving archaic features. Around 1.5 to 2 million people speak it, most of them in Latvia, where it has been an official EU language since 2004. It is written in the Latin alphabet with diacritical marks indicating long vowels and softened consonants. Standard Latvian is based on the central dialect; Latgalian, spoken in the east of the country, is a distinctive written variety protected under Latvian law. The language survived long periods of German and Russian dominance, and language policy remains a sensitive subject in Latvia today. Latvian communities in the UK grew considerably after EU accession opened the way to work in Britain.
