Luxembourgeois is the French name for Luxembourgish, or Letzebuergesch, the national language of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. It is a West Germanic language that grew out of Moselle Franconian dialects, so it sits close to German while having absorbed a large stock of French vocabulary. A 1984 law made it the national language, with French and German retained as administrative languages, and the three operate side by side in schools, courts and the press. Around 400,000 people speak it, mainly in Luxembourg itself, with smaller numbers in border areas of Belgium, France and Germany. It is written in the Latin alphabet, and although a standard spelling exists, everyday writing habits still vary from person to person.
