Macedonian is a South Slavic language and the official language of North Macedonia, written in its own version of the Cyrillic alphabet. Around two million people speak it, most of them in North Macedonia, with communities in neighbouring countries and a diaspora in Australia, Germany and elsewhere. It sits at the eastern end of the South Slavic dialect continuum and is closely related to Bulgarian, with which it shares features unusual among Slavic languages, including the loss of most noun cases and a definite article attached to the end of words. The standard language was codified in 1945 on the basis of west-central dialects. Macedonian grammar also distinguishes reported events from witnessed ones, a trait shared with several Balkan neighbours.
