Makhuwa is the most widely spoken African language in Mozambique, the mother tongue of the Makhuwa people of the country's north, particularly Nampula, Cabo Delgado and Niassa provinces, with communities also in southern Tanzania. It belongs to the Bantu group of the Niger-Congo family and is written in the Latin alphabet, although Portuguese remains Mozambique's official language and dominates schooling. Speaker estimates commonly run to six million or more, and the name covers several related varieties, including Makhuwa-Meetto and the coastal forms; the differences between some of them are substantial. Like most Bantu languages it uses a system of noun classes marked by prefixes. Radio broadcasts and some religious publishing use Makhuwa, but written use remains limited.
Prism Linguistics provides Makhuwa translation, interpreting and transcription across the UK in 300+ languages. Whether you need a certified document for the Home Office, a court interpreter, an NHS appointment or a business meeting, our vetted native-speaker linguists are ready to help.
