Dhivehi, also called Maldivian, is the official language of the Maldives and an Indo-Aryan language whose closest relative is Sinhala, spoken in Sri Lanka. It is written in Thaana, a script unique to the language that runs from right to left and whose letters derive partly from Arabic numerals. Around 350,000 to 400,000 people speak it, almost all in the Maldives, plus the island of Minicoy in India's Lakshadweep territory, where the local variety is called Mahl. Dialects of the far southern atolls, including Addu and Fuvahmulah, differ markedly from the standard speech of Male. Arabic and, more recently, English have supplied many loanwords. Dhivehi is used in government, schooling and the media throughout the country.
