Mambae is an Austronesian language of Timor-Leste, spoken in the mountainous centre of the country, in districts such as Ainaro, Aileu and Ermera, and in the hills behind the capital, Dili. It is one of the largest indigenous languages of Timor-Leste, with an estimated 100,000 to 200,000 speakers, and it is recognised as a national language under the constitution, which names Tetum and Portuguese as the official languages. Mambae shows marked dialect differences between its northern and southern varieties. Most speakers are multilingual, using Tetum as the national lingua franca and often Indonesian or Portuguese as well, a legacy of the country's layered history. Written Mambae remains limited; Tetum and Portuguese dominate print and schooling throughout the country.
