Mandingo, usually called Mandinka by its speakers, is a Mande language of West Africa. It is the most widely spoken language of The Gambia and is also spoken in the Casamance region of Senegal, in Guinea-Bissau and in Guinea, with speaker estimates of around two million. Mandinka belongs to the Manding dialect continuum, which also includes Bambara in Mali and Maninka in Guinea, and neighbouring varieties shade into one another. The language is written in several scripts: the Latin alphabet in official and educational use, Arabic script in Islamic communities, and the N'Ko script devised for Manding languages. Oral tradition remains strong, carried by griots, the region's hereditary singers and historians.
