Mandinka is a Mande language of West Africa and the most widely spoken language of The Gambia; it is also used in the Casamance region of southern Senegal and in Guinea-Bissau. Speaker estimates generally exceed one million. It forms part of the Manding language continuum together with Bambara in Mali and Maninka in Guinea, and speakers across the continuum can understand one another to a fair degree. Mandinka carries a celebrated oral tradition maintained by griots, hereditary musician-historians whose repertoire preserves the history of the medieval Mali Empire. The language is written in the Latin alphabet and in Arabic script, and literacy materials in both circulate in The Gambia. Mandinka-speaking communities are also found in Europe, including Britain.
Prism Linguistics provides Mandinka translation, interpreting and transcription across the UK in 300+ languages. Whether you need a certified document for the Home Office, a court interpreter, an NHS appointment or a business meeting, our vetted native-speaker linguists are ready to help.
