About Barnstaple
Barnstaple is the main town of North Devon, an old market and river port at the head of the Taw estuary. Most of the work that reaches us here comes through its court, hospital and college. About the Manx language
Manx is a Goidelic Celtic language native to the Isle of Man, close kin to Irish and Scottish Gaelic. Its last native speaker, Ned Maddrell, died in 1974, but a determined revival has brought it back: the 2021 census recorded 2,223 people with some Manx, there is a Manx-medium primary school, and the language is taught in island schools and recognised under the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.
