Manx Language Services in the UK

About Our Manx Services

Manx is the Celtic language of the Isle of Man, a Goidelic tongue closely related to Irish and Scottish Gaelic. Its last traditional native speaker, Ned Maddrell, died in 1974, and UNESCO at one point declared the language extinct, a label it revised after protests from Manx-speaking schoolchildren. Revival has been steady since. The Bunscoill Ghaelgagh, a primary school teaching entirely through Manx, opened in 2001, and recent Isle of Man census returns record over 2,000 people with some knowledge of the language. Manx spelling is unusual among Celtic languages because it follows English conventions rather than Gaelic ones, a legacy of the clergy who first wrote it down. The Isle of Man government supports the language through official use, funded classes and broadcasting.

Prism Linguistics provides Manx translation, interpreting and transcription across the UK in 300+ languages. Whether you need a certified document for the Home Office, a court interpreter, an NHS appointment or a business meeting, our vetted native-speaker linguists are ready to help.
