Marathi is an Indo-Aryan language and the official language of Maharashtra, the Indian state whose capital is Mumbai. With around 83 million native speakers it ranks among the most spoken languages in India, and it has one of the subcontinent's older literary traditions, with texts reaching back to the thirteenth-century saint-poets. Marathi is written in the Devanagari script, the same script as Hindi, though an older cursive script called Modi was used historically for records and correspondence. Standard Marathi is based on the speech of the Pune region; Varhadi, spoken in the Vidarbha region in the east, is among the recognised dialects. The language is also spoken in Goa and in neighbouring states, and by Marathi communities abroad, including in Britain.
