Mina, more formally Gen or Gen-Mina, is a Gbe language of the Niger-Congo family, spoken along the coast of Togo, especially around the town of Aneho, and in neighbouring coastal Benin. It is closely related to Ewe and to Fon, and Mina speakers generally manage conversation with Ewe speakers without much trouble. Although French is Togo's official language, Mina functions as a trading language in the markets of Lome, so many more people speak it than claim it as a mother tongue; first-language speakers number several hundred thousand. Like the other Gbe languages it is tonal, and it is written in the Latin alphabet with additional characters, though written use is modest. In Benin the language shades into Gen varieties spoken along the coast towards Grand-Popo.
