In the Republic of Moldova the state language has historically been called Moldovan, though linguists regard it as Romanian. The two are the same Eastern Romance language; the separate label dates largely from the Soviet period, when Moldovan was written in Cyrillic to set it apart. Since 1989 the language has been written in the Latin alphabet, and in 2023 Moldova formally renamed its state language Romanian in legislation. Around 2.5 to 3 million people in Moldova speak it, and everyday Moldovan speech differs from that of Bucharest mainly in accent, some regional vocabulary and a layer of Russian loanwords. Cyrillic spelling survives only in the breakaway Transnistria region. The local speech belongs to the Moldavian dialect group, which also covers north-eastern Romania.
