Monegasque is the traditional language of Monaco and a variety of Ligurian, the Romance speech of the neighbouring Italian coast around Genoa, rather than a dialect of French. French is Monaco's official language, and by the mid twentieth century Monegasque had nearly died out as an everyday tongue. The principality responded by putting it on the school curriculum, where it has been taught since the 1970s, and street signs in the old town appear in both French and Monegasque. It is written in the Latin alphabet. Fluent native speakers are now few, and most residents encounter the language through school, ceremony and song, but it remains a marker of identity for native Monegasques, a minority in their own country.
Prism Linguistics provides Monegasque translation, interpreting and transcription across the UK in 300+ languages. Whether you need a certified document for the Home Office, a court interpreter, an NHS appointment or a business meeting, our vetted native-speaker linguists are ready to help.
