Myene Language Services in the UK

About Our Myene Services

Myene is a Bantu language of coastal Gabon, spoken around Libreville, Port-Gentil and the Ogooue river delta. It is generally described as a cluster of closely related varieties rather than a single uniform language; Mpongwe, Orungu, Galwa and Nkomi are among the variety names, each tied to a particular community. Speaker numbers are modest, in the tens of thousands at most, and French, Gabon's official language, dominates public life, so Myene is considered vulnerable. Historically the Mpongwe variety carried some prestige as the speech of the Libreville coast during the early colonial trade era, and missionaries produced some of the first written materials in it in the nineteenth century. The language is written in the Latin alphabet.
