Neapolitan is a Romance language of southern Italy, centred on Naples and spoken across Campania, with related varieties extending through much of the south. Linguists generally treat it as a language in its own right rather than a dialect of Italian, since both descend separately from Latin, and UNESCO lists it as vulnerable. Estimates of speakers reach several million, though nearly all are bilingual in Italian and use Neapolitan mainly in speech rather than in writing. There is no single official standard, yet the language carries a considerable literary and musical tradition; the classic Neapolitan song repertoire, including O sole mio, is written in it. Regional initiatives in Campania have sought to promote and protect the language. Neapolitan is written in the Latin alphabet.
