Nubian languages are spoken along the Nile in southern Egypt and northern Sudan, with related varieties further afield in Sudan, including the Nuba Mountains and Darfur. The best known are Nobiin and the Kenzi and Dongolawi varieties, all belonging to the Nilo-Saharan family. Nubian has one of Africa's oldest written traditions: Old Nubian was written from around the eighth century in an alphabet adapted from Coptic and Greek, recording mainly Christian texts. The building of the Aswan High Dam in the 1960s flooded much of historic Nubia and displaced whole communities, scattering speakers to cities such as Cairo, Aswan and Khartoum. Arabic dominates public life in both countries, and the Nubian languages, spoken today by several hundred thousand people, hold no official status.
