Nyanja, known in Malawi as Chichewa, is a Bantu language of south-central Africa. It is Malawi's national language, spoken by a large majority of the population, and is also widely used in eastern Zambia and parts of Mozambique; Zambia recognises Nyanja as one of its main regional languages, and it serves as a lingua franca in Lusaka. Combined first and second language speakers are commonly estimated at 15 million or more. The language is written in the Latin alphabet and uses the noun-class system typical of Bantu languages. Chichewa and Nyanja are the same language under different names, the former associated with the Chewa people. Malawian and Zambian communities in the UK include many Nyanja speakers.
Prism Linguistics provides Nyanja translation, interpreting and transcription across the UK in 300+ languages. Whether you need a certified document for the Home Office, a court interpreter, an NHS appointment or a business meeting, our vetted native-speaker linguists are ready to help.
