Oriya, officially spelt Odia since 2011, is an Indo-Aryan language and the official language of the Indian state of Odisha on the Bay of Bengal. It is spoken by around 35 million people, with communities in neighbouring states including Jharkhand, West Bengal and Chhattisgarh. Odia has its own script, a rounded alphabet whose curved letterforms are often explained by the old practice of writing on palm leaves, which sharp angles would split. Its literary record stretches back many centuries, and in 2014 it became one of the languages the Indian government formally recognises as classical. Within the Indo-Aryan family, Odia's nearest relatives are Bengali and Assamese, its neighbours to the north and east, though the three are separate languages with their own scripts.
