Pahari, also called Pahari-Pothwari or Mirpuri, is one of the most widely spoken community languages in Britain, so much so that it is often cited as the country's second most spoken mother tongue. Most British Pakistanis trace their origins to Mirpur in Azad Kashmir, with many families settling after the Mangla Dam displacements of the 1960s, and it is heard strongly in Bradford, Birmingham, Luton and across the North and Midlands. It is very close to Punjabi and largely spoken rather than written, so formal documents are usually in Urdu.
