Kapampangan, also called Pampangan, is an Austronesian language of the central plain of Luzon in the Philippines, spoken chiefly in Pampanga province and southern Tarlac. Speaker numbers are generally estimated at around two million. It belongs to the same Philippine group of languages as Tagalog and Ilocano but is quite distinct from both, with its own sound system and a verb structure that gives it a reputation for difficulty among neighbouring speakers. Kapampangan was historically written in an indigenous script related to Baybayin, but the Latin alphabet long ago took over. Filipino and English dominate schooling and media, which puts pressure on regional languages like this one, though Kapampangan keeps a strong literary and folk-song tradition around cities such as Angeles and San Fernando.
