Brazilian Portuguese is the variety of Portuguese spoken by over 200 million people in Brazil, home to the large majority of the world's Portuguese speakers. Portuguese is a Romance language, and Brazil is the only Portuguese-speaking country in the Americas. The Brazilian variety differs from European Portuguese in pronunciation, rhythm and everyday vocabulary, and in some points of grammar, though the two remain mutually intelligible; a 1990 orthographic agreement brought their spelling largely into line. Influences from Indigenous Tupi languages, and from African languages brought by enslaved people, show up in Brazilian vocabulary and place names. Regional accents vary widely, from Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro to the north-east. Brazilian films, music and television have carried the variety around the world.
