Punjabi is an Indo-Aryan language spoken by well over 100 million people, most of them in the Punjab regions of Pakistan and India. It is unusual among Indo-Aryan languages in being tonal. Two scripts serve the language: Gurmukhi, used in Indian Punjab and closely associated with the Sikh scriptures, and Shahmukhi, a Perso-Arabic script used in Pakistan, so the same spoken language is written in two entirely different ways on either side of the border. Majhi, the dialect of the Lahore and Amritsar area, underpins the standard; Doabi, Malwai and Pothwari are among the other named varieties. Punjabi is one of the most widely spoken languages in the UK, and the 2021 census for England and Wales records it among the top non-English main languages.
