Serbo-Croatian is a pluricentric South Slavic language with four standard forms: Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian and Montenegrin. All four are based on the Shtokavian dialect, which is why speakers from Belgrade, Zagreb, Sarajevo and Podgorica understand one another without difficulty, whatever name they give the language. Two alphabets are in regular use; Serbian is written in both Cyrillic and Latin scripts, while Croatian and Bosnian use Latin. Taken together the standards have an estimated 16 million or so speakers across Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, plus a sizeable diaspora in Germany, Austria and Britain. Croatia also preserves the distinct Kajkavian and Chakavian dialect groups. In international courts and some UK public services the language is still listed as BCS, short for Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian.
