Spoken by around nine million people, Serbian is a South Slavic language, official in Serbia and one of the official languages of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with recognised status in Montenegro and Kosovo. It is unusual in using two alphabets in parallel: Cyrillic, which has official priority, and Latin, which is at least as common in daily life; literate Serbians switch between them without thinking. The modern standard owes much to the nineteenth-century reformer Vuk Karadzic, whose principle of writing words exactly as they are spoken still holds, one letter per sound. Serbian is mutually intelligible with Croatian, Bosnian and Montenegrin, all standardised forms of the same underlying language. Within Serbia the ekavian pronunciation dominates, while Serbs in Bosnia and Herzegovina generally use ijekavian forms, a difference heard in thousands of everyday words.
