Shona is the most widely spoken language of Zimbabwe, where it holds official status, and it is used by well over ten million people, with related varieties reaching into Mozambique. A Bantu language, it is tonal and written in the Latin alphabet under a standard orthography created in the 1930s that drew together several dialects, principally Zezuru, Karanga and Manyika; Korekore and Ndau belong to the wider cluster, with Ndau now separately recognised in Zimbabwe's constitution. Shona has a substantial written literature, and its mbira-accompanied song tradition is known internationally. The language dominates daily life across most of Zimbabwe outside Matabeleland. Zimbabwean migration since 2000 has spread Shona speakers widely, and the UK now has one of the larger Shona-speaking communities outside Africa.
Prism Linguistics provides Shona translation, interpreting and transcription across the UK in 300+ languages. Whether you need a certified document for the Home Office, a court interpreter, an NHS appointment or a business meeting, our vetted native-speaker linguists are ready to help.
