Because the region holds over 100 million people, Sichuanese ranks among the most widely spoken forms of Chinese, though exact speaker figures are hard to pin down. It differs from Standard Mandarin in tones, vocabulary and some sounds, enough that unprepared northern listeners can struggle, but it remains part of the Mandarin group rather than a separate branch like Cantonese. The speech of Chengdu is often treated as its representative form. Written communication uses standard Chinese characters. Putonghua dominates schooling and broadcasting, yet Sichuanese stays firmly in everyday use, and local comedy and opera keep the dialect in public view.
