Slovenian, or Slovene, is a South Slavic language spoken by around 2.5 million people, chiefly in Slovenia, where it is the official language, and by minorities in the border areas of Italy, Austria and Hungary. It has been an official language of the European Union since Slovenia joined in 2004. Written in the Latin alphabet, Slovenian is notable among European languages for keeping the dual, a grammatical number used specifically for two people or things, alongside singular and plural. For a small country the dialect picture is remarkably dense, with dozens of local dialects grouped into seven regional clusters, some of which differ markedly from the standard language taught in schools.
