Sorani, or Central Kurdish, is one of the two main varieties of Kurdish, spoken by an estimated 8 million people in Iraq and Iran. Its strongholds are the Iraqi cities of Sulaymaniyah and Erbil and the Kurdish regions of western Iran around Sanandaj and Mahabad. Kurdish is an Iranian language within the Indo-European family. Unlike Kurmanji, the northern variety written in a Latin alphabet, Sorani uses a modified Arabic script running right to left, with letters adapted so that vowels are written out. Kurdish holds official status in Iraq alongside Arabic, and Sorani is the dominant written form in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, used in government, schooling and a lively press. Differences from Kurmanji in grammar and vocabulary are large enough to hinder mutual understanding.
