Spanish is a Romance language that grew out of the Latin spoken in the Castile region of Spain, which is why it is also called Castilian. It is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. Written in the Latin alphabet, Spanish adds one letter of its own, the n with a tilde. Pronunciation and vocabulary vary between Spain and Latin America, and from country to country, yet the written standard, coordinated by language academies across the Spanish-speaking world, keeps the language remarkably unified. In Britain, Spanish is one of the most widely taught foreign languages in schools.
