Sudanese Arabic is the everyday spoken Arabic of Sudan, used by tens of millions of people as a first or second language and serving as the lingua franca of a country with well over a hundred tongues. It descends from the Arabic brought south by migration and trade from the fourteenth century onward and absorbed vocabulary from Nubian and other local languages. Pronunciation sets it apart from Egyptian Arabic to the north; the letter qaf, for instance, is typically pronounced as a hard g. As across the Arab world, the written language of education, media and religion is Modern Standard Arabic, in the Arabic script, while the Sudanese dialect dominates speech. Juba Arabic, a creolised offshoot, developed separately in what is now South Sudan.
