Sylhetti, usually written Sylheti, is an Eastern Indo-Aryan language variety from the Sylhet Division of northeastern Bangladesh and the neighbouring Barak Valley in the Indian state of Assam. Around ten million people speak it in South Asia. Its relationship to Bengali is debated: it is often described as a Bengali dialect, but it differs enough in sound system and vocabulary that many linguists count it a language in its own right, and it historically had its own script, Sylheti Nagri, now revived mainly for heritage purposes. Sylheti holds particular importance in Britain, since the great majority of British Bangladeshis have Sylheti roots; it is the dominant community speech in Tower Hamlets in East London and is heard in Bangladeshi communities across the country.
