Tagalog is an Austronesian language native to southern Luzon in the Philippines, including Manila, and it forms the basis of Filipino, the national language taught throughout the country. First-language speakers number around 28 million, and as Filipino it is used as a second language by much of a national population of over 100 million. Tagalog was historically written in Baybayin, an indigenous script, but has used the Latin alphabet since the Spanish period, and its vocabulary carries heavy borrowing from Spanish and English. Major regional languages such as Cebuano and Ilocano sit alongside it rather than beneath it. The Filipino community in the UK, prominent in the NHS and the care sector, keeps Tagalog among the more commonly spoken Asian languages in Britain.
Prism Linguistics provides Tagalog translation, interpreting and transcription across the UK in 300+ languages. Whether you need a certified document for the Home Office, a court interpreter, an NHS appointment or a business meeting, our vetted native-speaker linguists are ready to help.
