Tahitian is a Polynesian language spoken in the Society Islands of French Polynesia, centred on Tahiti. French is the territory's official language, and Tahitian is spoken by tens of thousands of people, with everyday use strongest among older generations and in the outer islands. The language has a small sound inventory, and the glottal stop, written with an apostrophe-like mark, functions as a full consonant. It is written in the Latin alphabet, first set down by missionaries in the early nineteenth century, and the Tahitian Bible was among the earliest substantial printed works in the language. Tahitian is closely related to Maori, Hawaiian and Rarotongan, and it historically served as a lingua franca across French Polynesia, influencing other local languages such as Tuamotuan. The Tahitian Academy works on standardising and promoting the language.
