Telugu is a Dravidian language spoken by more than 80 million people, mainly in the south Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, where it is the official language. That makes it the most widely spoken Dravidian language and among the largest languages in India. It has its own script, an abugida of notably rounded letters, a shape often attributed to the old practice of writing on palm leaves, which straight strokes would split. The literary record begins in the eleventh century with Nannaya's Telugu rendering of the Mahabharata, and in 2008 the Indian government designated Telugu a classical language. Sizeable Telugu-speaking communities now live abroad, notably in the United States and Britain. Spoken Telugu varies by region, but the standard form is understood throughout the two states.
