Tigre Language Services in the UK

About Our Tigre Services

Tigre is a Semitic language of the Horn of Africa, spoken mainly in the lowlands of western and northern Eritrea and along the Red Sea coast, with smaller numbers of speakers across the border in eastern Sudan. Estimates put the speaker population at around one million, making it Eritrea's second largest language after Tigrinya. Despite the similar names, Tigre and Tigrinya are distinct languages, both descended from the ancient Ge'ez of the Aksumite kingdom. The Ge'ez script is used to write Tigre in Eritrea, and Muslim Tigre communities have also used the Arabic script. Most Tigre speakers are Muslim, and Arabic serves as a common second language across the region. The language remains primarily oral, with a modest written output that includes radio broadcasting inside Eritrea.

Prism Linguistics provides Tigre translation, interpreting and transcription across the UK in 300+ languages. Whether you need a certified document for the Home Office, a court interpreter, an NHS appointment or a business meeting, our vetted native-speaker linguists are ready to help.
