About the Gaelic language
Scottish Gaelic belongs to the Goidelic branch of the Celtic languages, alongside Irish and Manx. It is written in the Latin alphabet and spoken mainly in Scotland, with its strongest communities in the Outer Hebrides and parts of the Highlands. Around 60,000 people in Scotland report being able to speak it, and the Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act 2005 gave it formal recognition, supporting Gaelic-medium education and the BBC Alba television channel. A small community descended from nineteenth-century emigrants still speaks Canadian Gaelic in Nova Scotia. The language descends from the Middle Irish once shared across Ireland and Scotland, and it remains close enough to modern Irish that speakers recognise a good deal of each other's vocabulary. Road signs across much of Scotland now carry Gaelic place names alongside English.
