What our Maay translators and interpreters cover for Bury St Edmunds clients
Most Bury St Edmunds bookings split between two needs: a document that has to be in another language for a UK body to accept it, or a conversation that has to happen with someone whose strongest language isn't English. The detail differs from job to job, but the principle is the same: the work has to be accurate enough that nobody on the receiving end has to guess what was meant.
- Legal: contracts, court papers, witness statements, instructed work for solicitors in Bury St Edmunds.
- Healthcare: patient letters, clinical notes, consent forms for Bury St Edmunds hospitals and clinics.
- Police and criminal: interviews, statements and disclosure material for Bury St Edmunds police, probation and CPS work.
- Business: supplier contracts, board papers, customer-facing copy.
- Public sector, social care, education, housing and registry work.
Certified Maay document translation in Bury St Edmunds
For UK official use (UKVI applications, court bundles, university admissions, registry office work), we provide certified Maay translation as standard: the translation plus a signed declaration of accuracy on Prism Linguistics letterhead, with the translator's name and our company stamp. Sworn or apostilled formats are available where a specific recipient requires them; tell us at quote stage.
Face-to-face, telephone and video interpreting in Bury St Edmunds
For appointments in Bury St Edmunds (a hospital outpatient, a solicitor conference, a contested hearing, a customer meeting), we send a Maay interpreter in person where it matters. For short or urgent conversations, telephone Maay interpreting connects in minutes. Video sits between the two: useful when parties are in different places but eye contact still matters.
See the face-to-face interpreting page for how we run an in-person booking, or the Maay interpreter in Bury St Edmunds page for what we cover locally.
Court work and HMCTS
We supply Maay interpreters with court experience for HMCTS hearings, tribunals and legal consultations in Bury St Edmunds. We match each court booking to a linguist whose credentials and vetting fit the setting; happy to send a CV before an appointment if it helps with your prep.

About the Maay language
Maay, or Maay Maay, is spoken within Britain's Somali community, the largest in Europe, which the 2021 census recorded at around 176,000 people by ethnicity in England and Wales, concentrated in London and in Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester and Leicester. It is the language of the Digil and Mirifle (Rahanweyn) clans of southern Somalia and only partly intelligible with the standard northern Somali most Somalis use. Much of this community arrived through the asylum system, so our Maay work is mainly interpreting: Home Office interviews, immigration and asylum tribunals, and NHS and court appointments where a Maay speaker is not fully served by standard Somali. Maay has around 2.75 million speakers, almost all in southern Somalia.
About Bury St Edmunds
Bury St Edmunds is a market town in the West Suffolk district, in the county of Suffolk. It has no Crown Court, so the more serious cases are heard in Ipswich, but the town has its own county court on St Andrews Street North, which handles civil and family business including a regional divorce unit. West Suffolk College provides further education and, since 2015, University of Suffolk degree courses, and local NHS services add to the picture. Between the courts, health services and colleges, there is a steady need for interpreters and certified translations. This is a largely rural, largely white part of Suffolk, and the requests we handle are less concentrated than in the cities. European languages come up regularly, sometimes tied to farm and food work in the surrounding countryside, along with the occasional immigration or medical matter. What firms and courts most often come to us for are the rarer languages a single hearing can hinge on, the ones other agencies cannot readily supply.

Why Choose Us
Translations that actually get accepted
Most of our work is for UK bodies that have to accept the translation as part of a process: courts, the Home Office, the NHS, universities, councils. We format and certify so the receiving body doesn't send it back.
Native Maay linguists, second-linguist review
Translators only translate into their first language. Every job is reviewed by a second Maay linguist before delivery: names, dates and formatting checked against the original.
Responsive in UK working hours
Quotes back within an hour in UK office hours. For on-demand telephone interpreting we cover out-of-hours too; call the main number and you'll get connected.
