What our Tigrinya translators and interpreters cover for Edinburgh clients

Most Edinburgh bookings split between two needs: a document that has to be in another language for a UK body to accept it, or a conversation that has to happen with someone whose strongest language isn't English. The detail differs from job to job, but the principle is the same: the work has to be accurate enough that nobody on the receiving end has to guess what was meant.

  • Legal: contracts, court papers, witness statements, instructed work for solicitors in Edinburgh.
  • Healthcare: patient letters, clinical notes, consent forms for Edinburgh hospitals and clinics.
  • Police and criminal: interviews, statements and disclosure material for Edinburgh police, probation and CPS work.
  • Business: supplier contracts, board papers, customer-facing copy.
  • Public sector, social care, education, housing and registry work.

Certified Tigrinya document translation in Edinburgh

For UK official use (UKVI applications, court bundles, university admissions, registry office work), we provide certified Tigrinya translation as standard: the translation plus a signed declaration of accuracy on Prism Linguistics letterhead, with the translator's name and our company stamp. Sworn or apostilled formats are available where a specific recipient requires them; tell us at quote stage.

Face-to-face, telephone and video interpreting in Edinburgh

For appointments in Edinburgh (a hospital outpatient, a solicitor conference, a contested hearing, a customer meeting), we send a Tigrinya interpreter in person where it matters. For short or urgent conversations, telephone Tigrinya interpreting connects in minutes. Video sits between the two: useful when parties are in different places but eye contact still matters.

See the face-to-face interpreting page for how we run an in-person booking, or the Tigrinya interpreter in Edinburgh page for what we cover locally.

Court work and HMCTS

We supply Tigrinya interpreters with court experience for HMCTS hearings, tribunals and legal consultations in Edinburgh. We match each court booking to a linguist whose credentials and vetting fit the setting; happy to send a CV before an appointment if it helps with your prep.

About the Tigrinya language

Tigrinya is the main language of Eritrea and of the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia, and in Britain it is closely tied to the Eritrean community, which the 2021 census put at nearly 25,000 people born in Eritrea, mostly in London and the West Midlands. Many arrived through the asylum system, at times as one of the largest single nationalities claiming asylum in the UK, and that shapes our work. We interpret for Home Office interviews and immigration and asylum tribunals, and translate identity, civil-status and educational documents supporting asylum, settlement and, later, citizenship. Tigrinya is spoken by around 10 million people across Eritrea and northern Ethiopia.

About Edinburgh

Edinburgh is Scotland's capital and one of the country's 32 council areas. Scotland has its own legal system, so the courts here are the Sheriff Court, the High Court of Justiciary for the most serious cases and the Court of Session, rather than the Crown and magistrates' courts found in England. NHS Lothian runs the city's hospitals, including the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, and the University of Edinburgh is one of four universities drawing students and staff from around the world. Courts, hospitals and universities together keep demand for interpreters and certified translations high. The languages reflect a capital city. Polish is one of the most widely spoken languages after English across Scotland, and Edinburgh also has settled South Asian, Chinese and Arabic-speaking communities. Scottish Gaelic is present too, though spoken by a minority. We are regularly asked for the rarer languages that other agencies cannot supply.

Why Prism Linguistics

Why Choose Us

Translations that actually get accepted

Most of our work is for UK bodies that have to accept the translation as part of a process: courts, the Home Office, the NHS, universities, councils. We format and certify so the receiving body doesn't send it back.

Native Tigrinya linguists, second-linguist review

Translators only translate into their first language. Every job is reviewed by a second Tigrinya linguist before delivery: names, dates and formatting checked against the original.

Responsive in UK working hours

Quotes back within an hour in UK office hours. For on-demand telephone interpreting we cover out-of-hours too; call the main number and you'll get connected.
