Trukese, now more commonly called Chuukese, is a Micronesian language of the Austronesian family, spoken in Chuuk State, the most populous state of the Federated States of Micronesia. It has somewhere around 40,000 to 50,000 speakers in Chuuk Lagoon and the surrounding islands, plus sizeable migrant communities in Guam, Hawaii and the mainland United States. Chuukese is written in the Latin alphabet, and a Bible translation dates back to missionary work in the nineteenth century. It is related to neighbouring languages such as Mortlockese, with which it forms a dialect chain across the region's islands. English is the official language of government in the Federated States of Micronesia, so many Chuukese speakers use English as a second language, though fluency varies widely between the outer islands and the towns.
