Twi Language Services in the UK

About Our Twi Services

Twi is the name for the principal varieties of the Akan language spoken in Ghana, chiefly Asante Twi and Akuapem Twi; Fante is a further major Akan variety usually named separately. Akan as a whole has an estimated eight to nine million first-language speakers and serves as a lingua franca for millions more across southern and central Ghana. Twi is tonal and belongs to the Kwa group of the Niger-Congo family. It is written in the Latin alphabet with additional letters for vowels English does not distinguish; Akuapem Twi was the first variety committed to writing, through nineteenth-century missionary work, while Asante Twi now has the larger speaker base. Akan speech is known for its proverbs, and day names such as Kofi and Ama, tied to the day of the week a child is born, come from Akan tradition.

Prism Linguistics provides Twi translation, interpreting and transcription across the UK in 300+ languages. Whether you need a certified document for the Home Office, a court interpreter, an NHS appointment or a business meeting, our vetted native-speaker linguists are ready to help.
