Ukrainian is an East Slavic language and the official language of Ukraine, spoken by an estimated 30 to 40 million people. It is written in a version of the Cyrillic alphabet and is related to, but distinct from, Russian and Belarusian, and it shares a good deal of vocabulary with Polish. The modern literary language grew in the nineteenth century around the poetry of Taras Shevchenko, and it survived long stretches when its public use was restricted under the Russian Empire and at times under Soviet rule. Many Ukrainians are bilingual in Russian, though use of Ukrainian has strengthened markedly since 2014 and especially since the full-scale invasion of 2022. The war also brought a large Ukrainian community to Britain, with well over 200,000 people arriving under UK visa schemes.
