Uyghur is a Turkic language of the Karluk branch, making it a close relative of Uzbek, and it is spoken by an estimated ten million or more people, chiefly in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of northwestern China, where it holds official status alongside Chinese. Uyghur is normally written in a modified Arabic script, adapted so that all vowels are marked, though Latin and Cyrillic orthographies have been used at various times, the latter among communities in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, where sizeable Uyghur populations live. The language carries a long literary tradition tied to the oasis towns of the old Silk Road, including Kashgar. Uyghur-speaking diaspora communities are now found in Turkey, Europe and North America.
