Uzbek is the official language of Uzbekistan and the most spoken Turkic language after Turkish, with an estimated 35 million speakers. Beyond Uzbekistan it is used by large communities in Afghanistan, where it has recognised status in Uzbek-majority areas, and in Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, as well as by migrant workers across Russia. It belongs to the Karluk branch of the Turkic family, and centuries of contact with Persian have left deep marks: unusually for a Turkic language, standard Uzbek has lost vowel harmony, and its vocabulary is full of Persian and Arabic borrowings alongside newer Russian ones. Uzbekistan has been shifting officially from Cyrillic to a Latin alphabet since the 1990s, and both scripts remain in use; in Afghanistan Uzbek is written in Arabic script.
