Vietnamese is the official language of Vietnam and by far the most widely spoken Austroasiatic language, with around 85 to 90 million native speakers plus large overseas communities in the United States, France, Australia and elsewhere. It is a tonal language, with six tones in the northern standard, and its three broad dialect regions, northern around Hanoi, central around Hue and southern around Ho Chi Minh City, differ noticeably in pronunciation. Vietnamese was historically written with Chinese-based characters, but since the early twentieth century it has used the Latin-based quoc ngu alphabet devised by missionaries, making it the only major mainland Southeast Asian language written in Latin script. Centuries of Chinese rule left a deep layer of Chinese loanwords. Vietnamese communities in Britain are concentrated largely in London.
