Visayan is a collective name for a group of related Austronesian languages of the central Philippines, the Visayas, and much of Mindanao, rather than a single language. The largest is Cebuano, with around 20 million speakers centred on Cebu, Bohol and northern Mindanao; Hiligaynon, or Ilonggo, is spoken by several million around Iloilo and Bacolod; and Waray-Waray is the language of Samar and eastern Leyte. These are distinct languages, not dialects of one another, though they share much vocabulary. All are written in the Latin alphabet. Filipino, based on Tagalog, and English dominate national schooling and media, but the Visayan languages thrive in daily life, local broadcasting and popular music, and by some counts Cebuano has more native speakers than Tagalog.
