Woleaian is the language of Woleai Atoll and several nearby atolls in the outer islands of Yap State, in the Federated States of Micronesia. A member of the Micronesian branch of the Austronesian family, it is closely related to Ulithian and Satawalese, its neighbours along the island chain that stretches towards Chuuk. Speakers are few, numbering in the low thousands at most, and the atolls themselves are remote, reachable mainly by infrequent ship. Woleaian is unusual in having had its own indigenous writing system, a syllabary developed in the early twentieth century, though in practice the Latin alphabet is what gets used today. English serves for schooling and administration, and migration to Yap and further afield continues to thin the speaker base.
