Wolof is the most widely spoken language of Senegal, where French is official but Wolof dominates conversation, markets, music and broadcasting. It belongs to the Atlantic branch of the Niger-Congo family and is also spoken in The Gambia and Mauritania. Native speakers are estimated at over five million, and second-language users take the total considerably higher, since Wolof works as Senegal's de facto lingua franca even among people from other ethnic groups. Unusually for its family, Wolof is not a tonal language. It is written in the Latin alphabet under an official orthography, and also in an Arabic-based script known as Wolofal, which has a long history in religious poetry.
Prism Linguistics provides Wolof translation, interpreting and transcription across the UK in 300+ languages. Whether you need a certified document for the Home Office, a court interpreter, an NHS appointment or a business meeting, our vetted native-speaker linguists are ready to help.
