Wu Chinese, the group that includes Shanghainese, is spoken in Britain within the wider Chinese community, mostly among people with family ties to Shanghai, Zhejiang and southern Jiangsu. Like other Chinese varieties it is largely a spoken language, and written Chinese is shared across dialects, so formal translation, of certificates, transcripts and legal or business documents, is generally handled in standard written Chinese. Wu matters more for interpreting, where a Shanghainese speaker is more comfortable in their home language for NHS appointments, the courts, or Home Office and settlement matters. Wu has around 83 million speakers in and around the Yangtze Delta, though it holds no official status in China.
